Empty Spaces – by Susan Ferguson Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 NIV)
Weary from a long walk to Galilee, Jesus stopped to rest at Jacob’s Well in Samaria. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and He asked her for a drink. Jesus knew about the woman’s checkered past – that she had been married five times and was living with a man that was not her husband. (John 4:16-18) Jesus recognized her need and offered her eternal life. One of His most beautiful teachings, Jesus used the water in the well to introduce her to the living water given by Him that would quench her spiritual thirst so she would never thirst again.
Haven’t we all sought happiness in what the world has to offer? Like the Samaritan woman, some of us have sought it in relationships. Others have pursued it with success, achievements, possessions, and hefty portfolios. All too often, our worldly pursuits fall short of our expectations, and they soon recede into the ordinary. We see this in the life of King Solomon, who had wealth, power, wisdom, and fame. After attaining everything he ever wanted, King Solomon found his life empty and meaningless. He later realized that what matters is that we fear God and keep His commandments. (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
We were created to know God. Only Christ can fill the empty spaces in our hearts.
