Butcher, baker, candlestick maker; who would you rather be?
Butcher is the soul who is larger than life, wielding his cleaver with speed and precision when attacking a monumental problem, but known to confess he doesn't always discern what the real problem is, especially when it involves people.
Baker is even-tempered, but sometimes grudging and crafty. He keeps his secret recipes rising in the oven till just the right time, then serves them up with relish, adding indigestion and the nervous jitters to butchers he doesn't agree with. It should be pointed out the baker is often the first to smell a rotten egg, or a rummaging rat in the kitchen, which serves him well most of the time, but sometimes catches him in his own trap.
Because the butcher and baker are so opposite in nature, they are known to come to blows.
At last is the mysterious grace-filled candlestick maker. Oh, to be a giver of light like he! He wields his influence in the stoniest of places, so the hardest of hearts appear to melt like wax. It is very strange and wonderful, the power the candle stick maker has over obstinate souls who now report, "His reproofs are a kindness" and "His warnings are an excellent oil" (Psalm 141:5 KJV)
Candlestick makers don't need to attack, or set punishing traps to achieve their own ends. They exemplify the Spirit of God at work in the soul who lets their "light so shine among men" so that God can achieve His.
Lord Jesus, may we shine the light of your love into a dark and dying world.
