"Give Me This Water" - Harriett Ford
He begged for water. Not wine, not strong drink. Water.
The rich man enjoyed luxury during his life, yet never share his bounty with the beggar Lazarus? Later, in a torment of flames, he begged for Lazarus to touch his tongue with just the tip of a finger moistened with water.
Would an alcoholic beg for a drop of whiskey? A wino for wine? I don't think so.
Water represents the Holy Spirit, rivers of living water flowing out of the spirit of a born again man. When a person dies, he is cut off forever from living water and doomed to eternal thirst.
Jesus thirsted on the cross. He was cut off from living water as he took the sins of the world into his own soul. He literally became sin for us, He who knew no sin, so that we (who knew no righteousness) might be made the righteousness of God. Our limited understanding cannot conceive of such an exchange--sin for righteousness without earning it!
A new birth of the human spirit simply by receiving Christ as Lord.
I did not understand why Jesus, the very Son of God, had to be born again from the dead until I realized His sinful condition on the cross cut him off from the Father. He defeated Satan in Hell by fulfilling the demands of God's law. Then He could be reunited with the Father, the source of life and living water once more. He made it possible for every believer never to be thirsty again, like the woman at the well in John 4: 4-26.
Father, I ask for this precious water now. I want to share it with those who are thirsting for Your righteousness. Amen.
