"Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit." (Jeremiah 17:7-8 KJV).
Contrast this scripture with the biblical warning directly preceding it, "Thus saith the LORD, Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places, in a salt land, and not inhabited." (Jeremiah 17:5-6 KJV).
In these two passages, a clear choice is presented between a blessing and a curse. If we put our confidence in the flesh, we will "be like the heath in the desert". We won't be able to see or comprehend the spiritual blessings and promises that are ours in the LORD. It is described as "departing from the LORD". (Note the scripture does not describe the LORD as departing from the heart, but the heart departing from the LORD; choosing to trust in something else.)
Is God implying we should be suspicious and mistrusting of everybody we meet? Of course not. God is referring to the spiritual "ground" we stand on; or what we place our assurance of deliverance in. For the believer it should be only in Jesus; because it is only Jesus who died for our sins, and it is only Jesus who can save our souls.
Dear God, keep the eyes of our faith fixed on Jesus, on Jesus only.
