| | | | | | Who is Like God? – Gail Davis When studying Deuteronomy 33, the main point of the chapter is God, not blessings from God. The chapter begins and ends with statements about Him. God is the main point. In verses 2-5 and 26-29, Moses reminded the Israelites about God.
• God is omnipresent. He was already where the Israelites went. (vs. 2) • God is holy. (vs. 2, 29) • God is majestic and powerful. (vs. 2, 26-29) • God loves them and made them righteous. (vs. 3, 26) • God is supreme. (vs. 4) • God is King of kings. He is King of “Jeshurun” (“the upright one”). (vs. 5, 26) • God is eternal, Protector, Commander, and Victor. (vs. 27-29)
Moses blessed the tribes. God gave the blessings. Blessed comes from the Hebrew word meaning to kneel, praise, and bless. It requires kneeling before the blesser. In these nine verses, Moses reminded the people God is the One who blessed them in the past and who blesses them still. He was and is able to do this because He is eternal, holy, righteous, majestic, omnipresent, powerful, and loving. This is the main point of Deuteronomy 33; God is the Blesser and the blessing. The Israelites, just as we today, did not deserve to be blessed by God, but He loved them and loves us. He wants to bless us with Himself. When we accept who God is and His salvific love, He blesses us. We kneel before Him and acknowledge for ourselves who He is. That is blessing – kneeling before and praising the Blesser.
Moses reminded the Israelites of this and we can know it, too. Will you acknowledge God? Lord, please shed the light of Yourself on us so we can kneel before You today.
