A Proper Devotion – Stephen Thomas
"That ye present your bodies a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto God." (Romans 12:1, KJV)
All my adult life, I believed that devotion was a song you read or a Scripture you recited prior to the start of a program. I was wrong.
I learned something new today about God and devotions. We sometimes treat devotions like a sparring partner. We beat ourselves up about things we’ve done wrong or allow our transgressions to govern our lives. That is not devotion either! Others believe devotion is a time to sit still and reflect on something. It is time for us to listen and allow God to speak to us and through us. Devotion is all of that and more. Today I know that devotion is really a strong loyalty or love towards someone or something. In this case, God is the person we are loyal to. In the book of Romans, Paul beseeches the Romans to devote themselves to God through sacrifice. We are to be willing to give up anything that separates us from God. Paul uses the word beseeches, which means speaking with tons of passion and conviction. Our sacrifice will never be perfect, but it can be willing. So today, do not think that your only sacrifice to God can be found in your checkbook. Be willing to personally devote yourself as a living sacrifice acceptable in God’s sight.
Kind Father, we are grateful for your love and the sacrifice that you made in the giving of your Son. Keep us and teach us to be ever mindful of our need to sacrifice as well. In Jesus' name. Amen.
