One of the Satan's strategies is to deceive the Christian into agreeing to something he would never agree to were he not beguiled. Departing from the living God would be one of them.
Paul warned the church of turning back to the "weak and beggarly elements" that held them in bondage for so long (Galatians 4:9 KJV). The trouble was, certain teachers had crept in, unsettling the minds of new believers, demanding they submit to particular laws and ordinances in order to be saved. This was a dangerous departure from the simplicity of faith in Jesus. In Romans Paul writes, "…For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." (Romans 10:4 KJV). Paul wasn't negating the importance of godly obedience to the law - he was emphasizing the error of trusting in mere human compliance as a means of justification before God. (Galatians 2:16) (Galatians 2:21)
Jesus shares power and glory with his heavenly Father (John 17:1) and his followers (John 17:22), and removes it from those who want to maintain control on their own terms. Hence, there will always be those who despise the saving influence He exercises on individual hearts and minds. That is why Jesus was condemned for blasphemy, and nailed to a cross as a heretic who deserved to die.
That's the power of unbelief in all its madness. See how it stops the ears, blinds the eyes, and closes the heart. No wonder Paul admonished the Galatians, "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God." (Hebrews 3:12 KJV)
Dear God, may we never depart from the saving grace demonstrated in the cross of Jesus Christ.
