I heard someone say that when they began attending church, they would throw a few dollars into the offering plate each Sunday. It wasn't until later that they realized they had been tipping God, not tithing.
Let me explain; we tip waiters and others who perform a service for us, right? But God's word in Malachi 3:10 says, "'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it' " (NIV). We are not to merely "tip" God when we have a few extra dollars, but to bring the "whole tithe" into the storehouse.
This verse also says that if we bring our whole tithe into the storehouse, He will bless us. I am not saying that if you tithe on Sunday, you will receive an enormous amount of money on Monday. However, the Lord blesses us in many ways other than money; the car may last longer, we may heal faster, and on and on, but His word says we will be blessed.
Let's think about this for a minute. When you are at a restaurant, and the waiter is superb you tend to give a larger tip, correct? So, think about the fact that you woke up this morning in a warm bed and had food to eat. God blesses us each and every moment of the day if we "tipped" Him for all He does, He would deserve much more than ten percent.
Dear Lord, Please take our tithes and offerings to use for Your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.
