This Sunday, football fans watch Super Bowl 50. Actually, it's double the fun to listen to the announcer. It might go like this: The quarterback huddles with team and calls play-action. Then the ball is hiked, and several players run downfield hoping to catch a long pass. Methodically, the passer gazes toward the end goal area searching for a receiver. Suddenly, an announcer screams over the loudspeaker, "He's got a man!" Translation: a player shook free from his opponent. Hopefully, that player hauls in the ball, scoring the winning touchdown. Exciting.
Even more phenomenal, in another place and time, Father God looked down on Calvary's cross and heard the angels singing, "He's got a man!" Indeed, a perfect man---the sinless, spotless Lamb, dying for the whole world. Before that, God had a man in Noah, Abraham, Joseph, David, etc. Beautiful plan to be sure. God has always had a man. Put simply and a little closer home…what about us? Thing is, we're on a battlefield called life. Can Christ proclaim, "I've got a man or a woman who will obey me?"
Not only does a heavenly cheerleading section (Heb 12:1) surround us---but, as believers, the greatest coach, trainer, and teacher lives within our hearts. Sure, we'll get roughed up a bit. So was He. Dear friend, let's trust the Lord wholeheartedly and lean not upon our own interpretations. He promises never to leave nor forsake as we fulfill the great commission of going all over the world or next-door proclaiming His great name. Believe me, we win more than an earthly trophy that eventually fades away. We inherit everlasting life. Nothing better than that!
