| | | | | | True Friendship – Karen White “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” John 15:13 NKJV
If we were to look at the number of our “friends” on one of the social networking sites, it would appear that we have an abundance of them. However, if we are honest, most are not friends but acquaintances. True friends; ones that we can go to in times of trouble, who strengthens us in the Lord, have our best interest at heart, and are willing to lay down their lives for us, are rare.
When I think of friends in the Bible, Jonathan and David come to mind. Theirs was an unlikely friendship; one was a shepherd, the other a prince. Then to further complicate matters, for a time King Saul favored David over his son, which could have caused strife between the two. Later, Saul wanted to kill David, but Jonathan protected his friend. The two men defied all obstacles and remained friends.
So, how does one begin a friendship such as Jonathan and David had? Proverbs 17 instructs us that a friend loves at all times not just when one has extra time or when the mood suits. Colossians 3:12-14 states that friends must be kind, patient, and willing to forgive one another and Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 says that one friend assists the other when they fall. The good news is that we all have a friend in Jesus, who willingly laid down His life for us, forgives us when we fail Him and is always there to pick us up when we fall. Now that is a true friendship!
Dear Lord, thank You for being my friend and the gift of other friends. In Jesus’s name, amen.
