What made Jesus the greatest leader of all time? He followed.
Even though God's Son, He learned obedience by the things He suffered (Heb 5:8). Jesus' entrance into this world as a Man involved Him in experiences that He would never have known had He remained in heaven. Although He had the physical power to do all things, He could not do anything that was wrong. Thus, it would have been wrong for Him to do anything that was not the will of God the Father for Him. This statement sets Jesus apart from all men who have ever lived. As Christ listened to His Father daily and received instructions from Him, so He acted. A perfect sacrifice for mankind required One who was always subject to His Father's plan.
Emphatically, Jesus summarized His entire plan for the disciples in two words: Follow me. The early church wholeheartedly followed Him. In fact, they actedso much like the Nazarene that they were described as 'little-Christ-imitators' or 'Christians'. A true disciple follows with total commitment "If anyone comes after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" (Matt 16:24). To follow Him means to live as He lived with all that involves of humility, poverty, compassion, love, grace and every other godly virtue. To yield to His control so completely that self has no rights whatsoever. Those who recklessly abandon their lives to Him, will find the only reason for existence. As He shows us how to die from the inside out, may we purposely change---following unseen hands all the way to eternity.
