There was a time in medieval history when the light of the gospel of Christ was dimmed nearly to extinction - not by enemies of the church, but by professing Christians themselves! Through a chain of pivotal events, church and state became merged, and the simplicity of faith in Jesus appeared as if it would be lost forever. Dubious rulers rose to power, and suspected "heretics" of the church were hauled away to courts, convicted, and imprisoned. Some were tortured, some were killed. Religious wars raged. Jesus' command to "love your enemies" (Matthew 5:44 KJV) became a foreign concept. Was there any true faith to be had among this religious debacle? Of course - the light of the gospel of Christ has always maintained its saving power, and ignited faith among those people you might least expect. Jesus builds and preserves His own church. He doesn't need our carnal weapons (II Corinthians 10:4 KJV).
In a free country, church and government no longer merge to impose its will on the consciences of the people. However, there may come a day when free people will be called to stand as fearless as those enlightened men and women of old, confessing their allegiance to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In that day, it will be more than words that grant us the courage to hold fast. It will be the power of the Holy Spirit manifest through a personal faith in a personal Savior. A faith that fixes our eyes on the King who reigns in a city made without hands, (Hebrews 13:14 KJV ).
Dear God, we don't know what the future holds, but "we know who holds the future". Give us the courage to hold fast.
