“...Kept by the power of God...” (1 Peter 1:5 NKJV).
Often, a variety of overused words become common, causing them to lose richness and depth of meaning. For instance, kept (derivative of keep). A phrase, ‘the keep’ appeared during Europe’s Mid-Ages. Constant wars leading to destruction and famines abounded. Thus, castles were built with a hidden compartment known as ‘the keep’. The keep provided safety against enemy attacks, rendering a fortified refuge of last resort should the stronghold fall to adversaries. Yet, before European times, King David’s psalmists lifted up their voices to call on One who made heaven and earth.
Beginning with verse three of Psalm 121, we find the word keep, keeps or keeper six times. We notice the believer’s foot will be preserved and unmoved. The firm footing signifies foundation or balanced standing---no doubt, resting on the Rock of ages. Next, we read about a Guardian who neither slumbers nor sleeps, with a guarantee that the Keeper is God Himself. He is personally involved with His children and extends security to the weakest saint “He who keeps you will not slumber, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (vs. 3-4). Further, the Lord protects from all evil, traveling alongside our every movement. Nothing can enter the life of a believer apart from God’s knowledge. We know He works all things together for good to those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28). No one is more protected than the one who places trust in Father God, our only hope. Finally, His watchfulness continues throughout all eternity “…He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7-8).
