I see children wearing pajamas at the bus stop in December. I spot young people walking the summer streets in in July wearing hoodies. It seems like everyone is wearing boots every day and for any occasion. Am I the only person struggling with clothing confusion? Before your teenager or coworker yells at you (or me) for being stuffy, tell them that the Bible supports the belief that there is a certain way for us to dress.
The Apostle Paul addressed the church at Ephesus about this very subject. Before talking about apparel, he encouraged us all to be strong, not in ourselves, but in the Lord. He encouraged us to be faithful to Him. There is always an appropriate way to dress, but there is never a bad time to pray.
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. Ephesians 6:11
He then outlined the dress code for a Christian. He told those who would listen to put on the whole armor of God. He then talked about our uniforms (the whole armor), our belts (of truth), our shirt (breastplate) and our shoes. Paul even encouraged us to wear a hat, which was the helmet of salvation.
The Apostle made this request for a number of reasons. If we are all dressed the same, we are less likely to be envious of one another. Paul also did this to let us know that our battle is a spiritual one, not a carnal one. He also wanted us to never lose sight of where our strength comes from.
Now, I have to go and clean out my closet while you read Ephesians 6:10-18.
