“He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.” Luke 8:24 (NIV)
What is this voice that settles the storm into a state of peace and calm? This is the voice that has a weight of authority. When Jesus spoke people listened for none had spoken before with such power that opened up their understanding. This is the voice that makes an impact on our conscious and moves us towards obedience; for our innermost being senses that what we hear is true and right. It is self-authenticating.
This is the voice that has a characteristic spirit: a spirit of peacefulness, and confidence, joy and sweetness, goodwill and reasonableness. It is not domineering and loud, but tender and quiet.
This is the voice that is consistent with the truths about God’s nature found in Scripture. God never contradicts himself. In this passage Jesus’ voice rebuked the storm that brought turmoil and upheaval. Jesus calms the storms of life. His voice gives life, for Scripture states that he came to bring life.
How well do we know this voice? Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; and they follow me.” (John 10:27). With constant practice we will learn to recognize the voice of the Shepherd and grow confident that his voice is the voice that will calm the storms of our lives. Seek his presence, seek his voice.
‘Lord Jesus, you are the King over the storms of life. You speak and the elements obey. Lord please help me today to recognize your voice, so that when you speak to me I too might obey.’
