Like Father, Like Daughter Jennifer Woodley
‘Let us make man in our own image, in our likeness.’ Genesis 1:26 (NIV)
Her eyes shone brightly with the same baby-blue color as her father’s. She inherited his slim, fine boned features, the same glowing olive skin and the same generous mop of wild, sandy blonde hair. She laughed with him at the same jokes, shared his passion for life and living and some said she knew what was on his mind, before he spoke. There was no mistake. She was her father’s daughter.
So too do women innately reflect the behavior of their Heavenly Father. Eve was blessed with the sacred role of helping, nurturing, supporting. She was to be an encourager: a companion who came alongside to promote the wellbeing of others: the helpmate. This is our gift and our appointment by God. ‘The Lord said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”’ (Genesis 2:18).
Consider how our mission mirrors our Heavenly Father. Psalm 121:2 says our ‘help comes from the Lord’ and Psalm 46:1 reminds us that ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.’ God is our encouragement, our help, our support. Our Heavenly Father gave the same qualities to His hand maidens so that they may be an encouragement, a support and a refuge for others.
We are called to imitate our Heavenly Father as witnessed by His Son. Study Jesus through the Scriptures – the example of helper and encourager par excellence. Let us esteem our role, consider our example, reflect His image and exalt our God.
