LAW, SIN AND MERCY Deepika Emmanuel Sagar
"You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:6-8, NIV)
Romans 5:19 tells us that we were made sinners by Adams disobedience. The result of Adam's sin and of our ensuing sins is our death. God gave the law to help us realize our sinfulness, to show us the seriousness of our offences and to drive us closer to God, seeking his mercy and pardon. The law lays the responsibility for sin on our shoulders but it offers no remedy.
Some might think "How can I be declared guilty of what Adam did thousands of years ago?" We inherited a sin nature from Adam which led us to personally sin. Since God must judge sin, it isn't fairness that we need - - it's mercy.
Just as Adam was a representative of created humanity, so is Christ the representative of new spiritual humanity. "The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 5:20-21).
The love that led Christ to die for us is the same love that sends the Holy Spirit to live in us and guide us every day. The power that raised Christ from the dead is the same power that saved us and is available to us in our daily lives. Be assured that having begun a life with Christ, you have a reserve of power and love to call on each day, for help to meet every challenge and trial.
Lord, I pray to you for the blessing of the Holy Spirit so that I may realize your grace. Amen.
