On Having a Realistic Estimation Susan Barnes
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3 NIV
The Living Bible puts it this way, "be honest in your estimate of yourselves". This is quite difficult as we tend go to extremes. Either we think of ourselves as worthless, useless and incompetent or we think too much of ourselves and think we are self-sufficient, able to achieve anything and completely independent.
To have an honest estimation means seeing ourselves as God sees us. He sees us as his loved children who have a significant purpose and great value. However we are not self-sufficient. We need his grace and mercy to enable us to achieve his purposes.
Sometimes we may take on too much responsibility and feel overwhelmed and unable to do what we think God expects. At other times we may be too passive and lacking faith to achieve God's purposes. To think soberly, means with moderation - not minimizing not exaggerating. It requires that we become comfortable not only with our God given gifts and abilities but also our limitations.
In addition we need God's enabling grace, even when it comes to having a realistic estimation of ourselves.
