It is an amazing fact that there are people who would like to talk about the Bible, have an urge to know its history, read books based on it, but are callous about reading the Gospel itself. If we are just reading books based on The Word and not The Word itself, then we are only increasing our knowledge, not developing an understanding and increasing the depth of our personal relationship with God.
Also, there are people who prefer reading a daily devotional over the Bible. While doing so might give us momentary satisfaction it will not sufficiently prepare us for the difficult times that only a personal time with God's word can acheive. A daily devotional might prepare us for the day but the word of God will prepare us for eternal life.
By saying this, I do not intend to discourage the reading of Gospel books but want to encourage you to read the Bible. If we read the Word with an intention to live it, then we are able to understand it better. No book can give us a better revelation from the Lord.
Ask Him for an understanding for every word written in the Gospel, and He will bless you with amazing wisdom, revealing things that you might have never thought about. "But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie-just as it has taught you, abide in him" (1John 2:27 ESV).
Lord, bless us with your mighty wisdom to understand your Word. Amen.
