Potholes – by KC Lemmer "If anyone, then, knows the good he ought to do and does not do it, it is sin for them." (James 4:17 NIV)
Each morning, on my way to work, I encountered a massive pothole. It stretched across a section of the road, hidden in the shadows of the early morning, and waited for me. Most mornings, I tried to remember it. Unfortunately, I often suddenly found myself jarring through this treacherous cavity in the road and grew frustrated with myself for not avoiding the pothole.
"Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (Genesis 4:7 NIV) Sometimes it is easy to fall into sin without realising it, maybe we are not focusing on Christ, and maybe we forget to remember where the weak areas in our lives are. We are told frequently in the Bible to turn away from sin. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." (NIV).
Most days, I now remember to avoid that hazardous area of road and dismiss distractions of other cars and the darkness. However, even better, someone has recently come along and patched up the pothole to help me on my journey.
Sin is a reality and cannot be ignored. Put on your armour of God and fight it. "God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV)
