Away With Fear! – by Sharon Dow “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4 NIV
Lately I have been facing fears and realizing that I’ve been hugging them close. This is in direct opposition to what the Bible has to say. In my small concordance, there are sixty-eight references to fear. Maybe it’s a human weakness!
Fears take so many forms and what I fear, you may think is foolish, but you perhaps have other fears. My big one is snakes. Even a picture is enough to send shivers through my body.
Maybe you love snakes, but perhaps you’re with me on claustrophobia? For many years I avoided elevators unless it was an absolute necessity. Have I ever been stuck in one? No, never! But now I live in an apartment and use the elevator almost daily; often by myself.
I’ve never been a fan of flying, and I’ve discovered it’s closely tied in with my claustrophobia. However, I have flown and will fly again. I’ve even agreed to fly across the Atlantic Ocean this June. This is indeed a major breakthrough.
But all this fear is a lack of faith in my Lord. On the day I agreed to the trip overseas, I came across the above verse. Ah! It’s so plain. I must seek the Lord to help me overcome my fears. And look at that promise: “. . . he answered me . . .” And not only did he answer, “. . . he delivered me from all my fears.” That’s an exciting verse! I can cross the ocean without fear. Incredible!
Now about those snakes . . .
