Eternity Is Not Time – by Robert Schaetzle
“As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal,” (2 Corinthians 4:18 ESV).
Have you ever had anyone ask you… “What is eternity?” Consider this as an answer; eternity is without beginning, and it is without end. One might give reference to when Jesus spoke “Before Abraham was, I am…” (John 8:58 ESV), or the Creation story beginning in (Genesis 1:1-2 ESV), or, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” as we read in (John 1:1 ESV).
But in these verses, there is an implication of a beginning. What becomes a challenge to recognize is — creation always was in the mind of God even before He spoke the Word. What Paul wrote in Corinthians, helps us to conclude, it’s not so much our duty to find a definite answer to all our questions about eternity, but to recognize that our purpose and hope is to understand and believe without seeing all the answers.
Eternity must be recognized as God’s invitation to ‘know Him!’ That is what is essential. Our Lord spoke to the Father in his high priestly prayer; “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent,” (John 17:3 ESV).
We were made for eternity, not for this world! It’s been said many times before, we’re just passing through on this journey. A journey of joy living in the presence of God who gave us life. Our life is always and has always been in the mind of God. God had us in his mind even before our own parents knew one another.
Father, thank you for knowing me even from eternity past, and you will purpose my future eternity in the presence of Jesus, AMEN
