One day a Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to his home to eat with him. A woman, known to be a sinner, found out that Jesus was reclining and dining at Simon’s table. Convinced He was the answer to her soul’s greatest need, she ‘crashed the dinner party’ so to speak, with a very expensive jar of perfume and placed herself at his feet. She began to kiss His feet and wash them with her hair and sorrowful tears, anointing them with perfume. By her actions she was casting herself upon the mercy of her Lord. She was by all intents and purposes exercising the little trembling faith that she had, and Jesus acknowledged it.
Now Simon wondered how Jesus could allow such a questionable woman to touch him, and reading his mind, Jesus proceeded to tell him a story of a creditor who had two debtors. One owed him a large amount and the other a little. “Which of them will love more?” he asked Simon. “I suppose the one who was forgiven more,” Simon replied. Then, turning to the woman, Jesus reminded him how little he had done to honor and welcome him into his home compared to the penitent woman who was washing his feet. “Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little,” Luke 7:47 NKJV.
This woman loved much because she had been forgiven much. She just needed an affirming word from Christ to settle it in her heart. “Your sins are forgiven you,” Jesus said to the woman. “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” Luke 7:48 and 7:50 CSB
Affirm a trembling soul in the faith that they have, even if it is small and shackled in shame and remorse, comforting them in the grace of the gospel. It’s Jesus’ way.
