“For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay;” (Acts 13:36 NASB).
My grandmother left me something I didn’t appreciate until years later. As I look back now, I remember her sitting by the window with her Bible in her lap. She would just stare out the window and start talking to herself—or so I thought. As I got older, I realized she was talking with God and probably praying for me. Everyone knew she loved God because she wasn’t ashamed to talk about Him, which she did so often.
If our generation doesn’t make serving God the main purpose in life for others to see, how will the next generation be able to pass it on? I was blessed enough to have people in my life invest in my generation. I didn’t always want to hear what they had to say, but I’m thankful for the seeds that were planted in me.
The greatest thing we can leave our children and grandchildren is our love for God, our life lessons from our walk with God, and the scriptures that have been the driving force of our life—the ones they hear us speak of and live by in our everyday life. If you want to teach them a habit, let them see you reading your Bible and spending time in prayer. Show them how to trust God when things seem hopeless, and to have joy in celebrating life. Let them see you walk in peace when it seems impossible. We need to leave a place in people’s hearts and lives in which they can look back on and say “thank you for investing in me.”
Prayer: Lord I want my life to invest in other’s lives. I ask You to work deeply in me and clearly through me, fulfilling the purpose you have given me for this generation.
