“And I pray that you…grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge…” (Ephesians 3:18 NIV)The Apostle Paul is talking to the Ephesians, and expressing his desire for them to experience all that God wants them to be. To just acknowledge that ‘Jesus loves me’ is not enough. If I understand just how much He loves me, it will impact my life in every way. When I was a child, my siblings and I, along with a couple neighborhood friends, decided to dig a swimming pool in our backyard. We had a fairly deep hole when we tired of digging. However, after a good rain, we could barely get our feet wet one person at a time. It was not nearly wide or deep enough for a swim. I think we are often like that when it comes to studying God’s Word. We are enthusiastic at first, but become satisfied with just dabbling our feet in it. We miss out on the full experience of immersing ourselves in His all-encompassing love. When I take time to think of His sacrifice and how He wants to spend eternity with me, I begin to think differently. God becomes the controlling influence in my life. That, in turn, causes me to live a moral life, care about others, and spend more time in His presence. Worldly desires lose their tug on me. “Father, please forgive me for hurrying through my time spent with You. Help me to immerse myself fully into Your Word and great love, to deepen my commitment to You. And let that commitment compel me to conform more to Your image, reach out to others, and share Your love. Amen.”Marlene is a retired teacher who longs to make Jesus known. Contact |
