A widow was about to bury her only son. “When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said, ‘Don’t weep.” Then he came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And He said, ‘Young man, I tell you, get up!’ The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying ‘A great prophet has risen among us,’ and ‘God has visited his people.’ This report about him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity” (cf. Luke 7:11-15 CSB).
The report also filtered into a dark, dank, and no doubt filthy prison cell where a notable prisoner was being held whose name was John — John the Baptist. John once said to those who thought he might be the Messiah, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire,” (cf. Luke 3:16 CSB).
John went from baptizing and heralding the Son of God, to suffering in a gloomy cell for rebuking Herod the tetrarch’s sins. It was a terrible turn of events. His gloom became so thick, that he began to entertain doubts— sending two of his disciples to find Jesus and ask Him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus wasn’t offended by John’s question, but told the men to report to John what they had seen and heard; the blind received their sight, the lame walked, lepers were cleansed, the deaf heard, the dead were raised, and the poor were told the good news. “And blessed is the one who isn’t offended in me,” he added (cf. Luke 7:22-23 CSB).
Have you ever been offended by Jesus on account of some dire circumstance? An un-offended faith can say “The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:20b CSB)
