Be Still and Let God Love You

Psalm 46:10a: "Be still, and know that I am God..."

The moment my son began to crawl, he was into everything. Gone were the peaceful days of quietly balancing him on my lap. He repeatedly wiggled himself down to the floor, usually landing in trouble. Even then, he couldn't stop long enough to learn about his mistakes.

I recall, on one occasion, a sharp splinter became lodged in his hand. He sprinted into the house, with tear-filled eyes, flushed cheeks and a clenched fist. No matter how much I tried to soothe his fear, he wouldn't let me examine his hand. Obviously he thought I might hurt him. Simply put, he didn't trust me. After a few minutes, I grabbed his hand and said, "Be still and let me look at it." After much coaxing, he finally allowed me to nurse his wound.

I believe a deeper meaning to Psalm 46:10 can be found in the words, "I am God." Notice that it does not say, "I was God." Yes, Jehovah Rapha is closer than a heartbeat, but how often must he persuade us to unclench our fists so that he can heal our wounds?

The next time you blow on a skinned knee, remove a splinter from a tender foot, or kiss painful tears away, remember that the care you show your child pales in comparison to God's care for you. Be still and let God love you.
