Dad and Mom Forgot Me – Ken Ebright
“Be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid of them and don’t be frightened, because the Lord your God will go with you. He will not leave you or forget you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 NCV)
When I look back at both my parents, I realize that I didn’t have a very close relationship with them. My mom was an alcoholic. She made my dad out to be the villain. Admittedly, mom and I were a little closer – and I didn’t understand her drinking problem was a bad thing. Both my parents would get into heated arguments, and there was even a short period of time when my dad moved out.
My dad was a mechanical engineer and really good at math. He’d try to help me with it, but he would get mad at me. When I was fourteen my mom committed suicide. Dad would re-marry, but then around fifteen years later divorced my step-mom and left town. He would be absent from my life for about another fifteen years, then he remarried my step-mom.
Looking at the verse makes me remember the feeling of being forgotten by both of my parents. However, there is someone who will never leave me or forget me, and that someone is Jesus. I did not have a close connection with my parents, because sin got in the way of our relationship. Nonetheless, I have someone who will stand by me no matter what happens. Because of Jesus, we can be strong and brave and not be frightened—because Jesus has our back and he will be there for us. The one relationship we can count on is with Jesus.
