Consequences - Jennifer Woodley
‘Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” John 18: 25 (NRSV)
When we become a disciple of Christ, when we say yes to the invitation to follow him, we are also saying yes to the consequences of that decision. Whatever they may be. Peter denied Jesus three times, not because he didn’t love his Lord, but because he was fearful of where that love may take him. Would it mean his own death as well? Would it result in a beating in the same way the soldiers had brutally battered Jesus? Peter was not willing to go there.
This was a love that may cost too much. Too much for the disciple to bear. Instead, Peter backed down and recanted on his confession to even know Jesus. Every love comes at a price. The deeper the love, the greater that price. How great was Jesus’ love for us, that he paid the highest price of all.
Like Peter, are we fearful of the consequences of confessing our faith? Ask God for boldness and strength. Or like Jesus, are we ready to carry our cross, unashamed of the gospel and eager to confess our commitment to our Savior. Thank God for his Spirit who empowers us with the courage and strength to steadfastly face the consequences of loving our Lord.
Heavenly Father, I want to be found growing in my love for you, despite the consequences. Help me to face whatever hardship lays ahead and remain faithfully committed to you always. Amen
