Called to a Holy Life – Jennifer Woodley

‘Our ancestors sinned; they are no more and we bear their iniquities.’ Lamentations 5:7 (NRSV)

The Israelites at the time of the destruction of their city were obliged to bear not only their own guilt, but that of the previous generations as well. Sound fair? Perhaps not, but it is true. If we choose to mimic the sinful behavior of those who have gone before us, we too will bear their iniquities.

The Israelites lamented over the consequences of the bad choices their forebears had made. Their inheritance had been turned over to strangers; their homes were the possession of foreigners; they were driven to labor hard, being given no rest and they were obliged to buy the very necessities of life from the conquerors or pay exorbitant taxes. The joy of their hearts had ceased and their dancing had turned to mourning.

Here is a clear reminder that our actions do have consequences and that our lives do have a powerful impact on our children, either for good or evil. Behavioral problems cannot be fixed with a quick prayer. Each man and woman of God needs to address their Christian journey seriously. We must follow the Master by submitting to his lordship, and reckoning ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ. We need to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and renew our minds by the word of God.

We are in need of true repentance, transformation and empowerment so we can live the holy life God calls us to – for our sake and those who will follow after us.
