Cafeteria Christian – Jane H. Young
We used to go to the K&W Cafeteria years ago, where everyone would grab a tray and start walking down a long row of delicious food. As we approached each dish, we would pick the ones we liked and move forward, leaving the ones we didn’t like behind.
If we compare approaching the Scriptures to a cafeteria line it should look completely different, right? Sadly enough, for most of us, the process is about the same – picking and choosing which scriptures we want to live by and ignoring the rest of what God says.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;” (2 Timothy 3:16 NASB).
God’s Word is the whole Bible and should be used to guide us through this wonderful life He has given us. He didn’t give us a list and tell us to choose the ones that fit our lifestyle, nor did He tell us we could ignore all the verses that we don’t like, or the ones that make us uncomfortable.
Let’s compare it another way, we can’t just eat our favorite foods, we need to eat food we might not like so much, so we’ll be strong and healthy. It’s the same with God’s Word. Our spirits need all of what God’s Word has given us, otherwise, we’ll become spiritually weak and unable to fight against the things this world and the devil constantly tempt us with.
Just a thought: Let’s say you have a puzzle of a beautiful rainbow, but decide to only use certain colors and disregard the rest. Your puzzle will never represent the full covenant God made with us when He placed that first beautiful rainbow in the sky. In the same way, when we pick and choose what we want from scripture, we will never get the full blessing that God wants us to have. Let’s give Him our whole self and receive all He is offering us.
