Because of Unbelief – Jennifer Woodley
‘Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith.”’ (Matthew 17:19-20) NRSV.
The disciples were perplexed: Why wasn’t the young demon-possessed boy healed? Despite their prayers, the evil spirit wouldn’t budge. After Jesus had cured the child, He explained that the disciples couldn’t do this because of their unbelief. Little faith, not the will of God, was their defeat.
Today we see the same downfall among believers. The Bible does not say that the gift of healing and works of divine power was granted only to the early church. On the contrary, Jesus said just the opposite. “And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons….. they will lay their hands on the sick and they will recover.” (Mark 16:17, 18).
The more we believe that the Spirit of God lives in the souls of believers, the more miracles He will work in His people. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, and so that means He has not stopped working miracles amongst us. He hasn’t changed His mind. We live in a time where we must anticipate, expect and continue to believe our Saviour to manifest His miracle working power in our lives.
Are we struggling with unbelief? Are there difficulties we face that are just too big to face on our own? Call upon the name of the Lord, and believe that He can do more than we could even ask or think possible.
Lord, today help me to believe more and more in the wonder-working power that dwells mightily in me.
