Beating Together With The Father’s Heart
Cheryl Weber
I took my mother to the emergency room recently because of a dangerous heart condition; her pulse had slowed to only thirty-five beats per minute. In the ER, a nurse explained that the top and bottom parts of her heart were not working together to coordinate the proper electrical pulses. Instead, each half was doing its own thing, “like neighbors who should be talking to each other but are holding their own separate conversations.” A pacemaker implanted the next afternoon solved the problem and she was discharged the following evening.
My mother’s malfunctioning heart would have killed her if left untreated. We in the body of Christ sometimes develop a dangerous “heart condition.” When we allow sin, false teaching, pettiness, infighting, and selfish ambition into our midst, we become like the “neighbors who should be talking to each other but are holding their own separate conversations.” Our testimony is tarnished and the work of the kingdom is hindered or halted.
In John 17:23, Jesus prayed to the Father for all who would believe in him. “May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” NLT
A lost and hurting world awaits the eternal hope of God’s love, truth, and salvation. Jesus commanded us, his followers, to abide in his love through obedience. John 15:9-10 Jesus wants his body, the church, to be like a properly functioning heart, beating together with the “electrical pulses” of the Father’s love for each other (John 13:34) and for the lost. Through this working together, the gospel will go forth throughout the world, bringing many sons and daughters into the kingdom and transforming societies. We will see the increase of Christ’s government to which there is no end (Isaiah 9:6-7) and we will hasten the day of his return through our godly lives. 2 Peter 3:11-12
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help us repent of the things that divide us as your body. Lead us into the unity you prayed for so that we may accomplish your plans and purposes. AMEN.
