An Example to Follow – Jennifer Woodley
‘Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him.’ John 13:5 (NRSV)
Jesus excluded no disciple as he bent down to wash his friends’ feet.
He included Thomas. The one who doubted that his Master had risen from the dead. The one who struggled to believe that Jesus had done what he proclaimed he would do.
He included Peter. The rebellious, out-spoken one who denied he even knew Jesus, not once or twice but on three occasions.
He included Judas. The ultimate betrayer who gave away his friendship with the Savior for a handful of silver. A poor exchange.
Jesus washed all his disciples’ feet regardless of what they had done or would do to him. Jesus served in love even when slander, false accusations, deceit and pain was hurled upon him. And then he told his friends in verse 15, “For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.”
Wash the feet of your enemies: those who curse you, those who wrongly accuse you, those who bully and belittle you. Love all. Exclude no one. Just as Jesus has done. Always.
Dear Jesus, help me to follow your example. On my own I am weak, the call seems insurmountable. Yet I can wash the feet of others, even those who hate me, with your strength. I commit myself today to you. Lord be my strength. Thank you.
