By the time December unfurls, every child has probably completed their Christmas list. As adults, perhaps we simply buy things we want throughout the year, leaving us puzzled over a traditional holiday list for our families. Oh, you still get it done, but why not try something new this year? A spiritual Christmas list for yourself. What do you want to possess deep within your soul that has been elusive? What beauty would you like to adorn your sometimes wayward heart? What spiritual goals have you put aside as too challenging?
This different kind of Christmas list isn’t generated from the Sears Wish Book, or from internet searching; it comes from God’s Word. Browse various Biblical books. Listen to what the Holy Spirit speaks. A myriad of spiritual items comprise the vast inventory from Genesis to Revelation--you can order them—put them in your shopping cart!
Start from the basics—the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness, and self-control. Who couldn’t up the shelf supplies on these?! Or compose a list from any other book in God’s Word. Last Advent I was browsing through Psalm 51, and found these desirable items/qualities/virtues/ blessings: mercy, compassion, goodness, cleansing, wisdom, sincerity of heart, joy and gladness, clean heart, steadfast spirit, God’s presence, joy of salvation, willing spirit, teaching, rescue, healing power, broken spirit, humbled heart, prosper, rebuilt. Wow--what a spiritual lineup! I was ready to fill up my cart. But after several days of contemplation, I actually settled on one: steadfast spirit.
Is there an item from Galatians or Psalm 51 that you want in your cart? Order it. Learn the steps to get it. Pay for it. The Father of lights will send it in His perfect timing.
