“Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and defiling many,” Hebrews 12:15 CSB.
What I feel I have a right to be is not necessarily what I ought to be. If I spend my life justifying my outcomes by building a case against everyone from the past to the present, I’ll end up feeling cheated, mad, and most of all — bitter. My parents made mistakes – lots of them. They weren’t the heroes they should have been while battling their own demons, and I guess you could say I paid the price. But I made mistakes too – lots of them. I had to fight the devil just like them and I allowed him to get the upper hand at times, too.
So, what should I do with bitter feelings? I could puzzle about my past and feel resentful. I could imagine I inherited some wimpy character trait from a corrupted gene pool that turned me into a people-pleasing doormat. (Maybe that’s why I made some of those lame-brained choices.) But guess what? None of those ruminations are going to empower me – they’ll only make it hard for me to love the people I’m blaming, instead of taking responsibility when and where I can, here and now.
Dwelling on what I’ve lost will only keep me from being thankful for what I’ve got, and I don’t want to live like that. I want my words to set people free, not strike them with a cudgel of blame over and over. I have a responsibility to take control of my feelings, so they don’t take control of me. God says, “Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland,” Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV.
I’m left with a choice then; to wander in the wilderness or jump in the stream with Jesus. Life is too short friends. I think I’d rather do that.
