A City Under Siege – Toni M. Babcock
“Blessed be the LORD, for he has wondrously shown his faithful love to me in a city under siege,” (Psalm 31:21 CSB).
For believers in Jesus, sometimes it feels as if the world is under siege by conspiratorial enemies who oppose us. Perhaps you in fact are facing opposition that was never a part of your life before — and it’s beginning to feel a little uneasy.
Consider the life of King David and take heart. He experienced opposition, persecution and ridicule, even “terror on every side” when his enemies conspired and plotted to take his life. David was familiar with the kind of hate many experience in our polarized, politicized world today. Interestingly, his enemies did the exact opposite of what David prayed his faithful God would do.
David prayed God would listen closely to him. His enemies didn’t want to hear him at all. He was cancelled.
David prayed God would deliver him “from the net that is secretly set for me.” God sets people free, while the enemy sets traps for people they hate. Have your enemies set a trap for you?
David believed God saw his affliction and knew his troubles. David’s enemies didn’t care. They pigeon-holed him and made him feel like he didn’t matter. Not so with God.
David remembered how God “set his feet in a large place.” He knew how enemies take hostages, box them in and bind them — how they ridicule and attempt to shut down those who love the Lord. God however, encouraged and strengthened David to speak up.
As always, enemies conspire to bring down their opponents and often wish they were dead. But God desires to lift people up and give them Life.
David felt forgotten like a dead man in this world, but in God’s kingdom he was always alive and remembered. We are too — no matter the opposition, (cf. Psalm 31 CSB.)
