Winter is here. I’m not a cold weather person. I like enjoying the warmer weather. That is one of the good things about living in Oklahoma. We don’t have too many days or weeks of frigid weather. Just enough to enjoy the seasons. Like this week it was in the 60s and later in the week a few days in the teens and single digits. And, we got some snow.
It reminds me of life. The ebb and flow. The cycles of life - the seasons and all they can represent for you and nature. Seasons are vital to growth and evolution. They help with the transitions in life.
Winter allows you to be more still, go within. It’s a time to quiet your mind.
Take time after the holidays to slow down, rest more and listen to your soul.

INSIGHTS TO THRIVING IN UNRETIREMENT

| Are You Living or Are You Dying? What would thriving in retirement mean to you? • Is great health? • Is it wealth? • Is it travel? • Freedom?
Take time to define what you need to feel like this time of your life is fulfilling for you.
Too often people in retirement have not thought about what they expect for this chapter.
It’s more like, just glad to be retired.
You do know, unless you actively do something with your mind and body, it will atrophy rather quickly in these later years.
You don’t have to look too far to see what the media displays as aging and retirement. It’s dismal.
Think about the impact this can have on your life. According to Social Security Administration, retirement will be 18-20 years.
What do you want it to be like for you?
Make it your best.
As Garth Brooks says, “Every man dies but not every man lives.”
I’m on a mission to change that. I plan to highlight what is possible if you take charge of your life.
In Younger Next Year, the book shows how men 50 or older can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years. They can live like 50-year-olds well into their eighties. The book shares strategies and ideas how to make that happen. It says, “To stave off 70% of the normal decay associated with aging (weakness, sore joints, apathy), and to eliminate over 50% of all illness and potential injuries” follow ideas in this book.
I want to encourage you to take time to design what this fourth quarter of your life will look like, feel and be.
Where do you start? Think about what you love to do. Just like Clyde Buchanan, 81, retired oceanographer and application engineer. Memory Care is his passion. He understands the gift of music. He knows that music awakens good memories for Alzheimer patients. So he creates playlists of more than 100 songs on IPODs for residents in memory care and skilled nursing units. He also helps them be able to use their smartphones and computers better.
Use your mind to help others. What’s on your bucket list? My husband wanted to paint a picture. I gave him three (3) months of oil painting lessons to give it a try. Five (5) years later he is still taking lessons. He has recently joined an art gallery in town to see how that feels to him. (He sold a couple of paintings.) He knows he loves to share his paintings with others- like his high school football coach who recently went to an assisted living center. Bo painted him a picture for his room. Coach was so touched. He’s not sure it will be what he chooses when he retires but loves what it does for him and others.
Share your passions and desires to enrich the world. Take time to know what matters for you during this second act of life. Then, create a plan to make it happen so you are living life fully.
