Run by father and son Gary and Nick Farr, By Farr is at the top echelon of Australian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, driving powerful, mineral-focused, single-site wines from near Geelong in Victoria. They have worked with some of the best estates internationally; the Farr’s have a long history with Burgundy’s Domaine Dujac in particular, Gary and Nick both having worked and learned there in turn. Set in a very cool, dry climate, the vineyards are based on ancient river deposits within the valley; the variation of six types of soil, the climate and the excellent drainage ensure very small yields, and intensely flavored fruit. Only 36 of their 130 acres are under vine. The wines are all single vineyards, wild fermented, gravity fed, and generally with significant whole-cluster inclusion.

2016 By Farr Chardonnay

Grilled pineapple, peach and sweet corn all mingle easily on the nose of the 2016 Three Oaks Vineyard Chardonnay. It's medium-bodied but expansive, adding hints of butter and creamy richness as it coats the palate. For all that, it stays refreshing and citrusy on the finish, an excellent all-around effort.


2015 By Farr Pinot Noir Farrside

The current release, By Farr's 2015 Farrside Pinot Noir is by turns dark and brooding and bright and fresh. It almost seems to depend which sip one takes. Is it black cherries or raspberries? Earthy and meaty or red-fruited and pure? That's the level of well-integrated complexity boasted by this exceptional wine. It's medium-bodied and solidly built, with firm but ripe tannins that softly frame the fruit, dressed up with hints of French oak. Already approachable, it should easily age through 2025.
