Subject: ✶⚜The Mythical Chateau Grillet⚜✶

The monopole Château-Grillet is one of the rare micro-appellations in France, and has long been considered one of the Rhône Valley’s most prized terroirs, sitting on a steeply terraced vineyard with southeastern exposure, in the heart of the Condrieu wine-producing area.

Many vignerons in the surrounding Condrieu appellation openly dreamed of what they could do with the estate if it ever came up for sale. Chateau Latour owner purchased Château-Grillet in 2011.

Planted with Viognier, Château-Grillet’s land is capable of producing one of the finest expressions of the grape in the world, with bright anise, peach and melon notes and extremely fine minerality, in contrast to some of the more powerful Condrieus made by Georges Vernay, Yves Cuilleron, E. Guigal and others.

Cotes du Rhone Blanc

From the 2011 vintage when Chateau Latour purchased the property, the winery decided on an even stricter selection for the grapes going into the Château-Grillet Vin Blanc blend, using the younger parcels to create an excellent Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc. Made entirely from Viognier, it has much to offer with very good fruit and plenty of charm. This wine has simply been named "Côtes-du-Rhône", like the appellation it belongs to.

2017 Château-Grillet Cotes du Rhone Blanc $75 bottle

93 Points Wine Advocate “The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc displays a sense of restraint allied to great richness, making for a wine that's intense and powerful without being at all heavy. Pencil shavings accent apricot and melon fruit in this full-bodied yet beautifully balanced offering.”
2016 Château-Grillet Cotes du Rhone Blanc $75 bottle

92 Points Wine Advocate “The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Blanc shows almost butterscotch notes and caramel overtones to its suggestions of grilled melon. It's full-bodied and lush but finishes bright and crisp, a fine paradox that typifies this estate's overall feel and this vintage in particular.”

2017 Château-Grillet Condrieu $150 bottle

Inaugural vintage from a recently purchased tiny parcel that adjoins the existing property. The soil is naturally quite similar to that of Château-Grillet’s plots and vinification methods follow the same philosophy. However, the maturation process is much shorter than Château Grillet, giving a wine which unveils a different expression of Viognier’s aromatic complexity and can be enjoyed in its youth. It is a rare wine which is produced in small quantities.
Château-Grillet Vin Blanc
2016 Château-Grillet Vin Blanc $425 bottle

96 Points Wine Advocate “Caramel overtones frame notes of apricot and peach on the full-bodied, silky-textured palate, hung on a backbone of brine and citrus zest.”
2015 Château-Grillet Vin Blanc $350 bottle

97 Points Wine Advocate “Coming from mature vines located higher on the property’s slopes, the 2015 Château-Grillet is a rich, intense, full-bodied wine of uncommon grace and elegance. It delivers some of Viognier’s hallmark floral-spicy-apricot notes but is actually more about textural richness and silk, balanced by hints of citrus zest and a briny character that lingers effortlessly on the finish.”
