2017 M Sokolin Dolcetto Dosset $25 bottle
Tasting Notes Earthy and smoky, with pepper, cocoa and violet. Blackberry and red plum, absolutely brilliant.
Sokolin is a native New Yorker who has travelled the world making wines after a career as a sommelier in San Francisco. He now has projects in Spain, Georgia, Australia and Italy. His inspiration for this wine is Vajra, Bondonio, Chionetti & Abonna who make far more lifted and fragrant versions of Dolcetto. This is an outsiders perspective of something simple, given complexity through nuance.
Viticulture & Winemaking From the Bricco Chiesa Vineyard in Dogliani. North facing. Hot year but picked earlier than his peers. Grapes are hand harvested and 30% whole bunch maceration. The fermentation is on indigenous yeasts with no addition of anything but a touch of SO2 at bottling.
