Subject: Old-School Napa Cabernet (& Riesling!)

A bit under the radar (unless you have read the many praises of Eric Asimov), these are subtle, balanced, spectacular wines from the “Mountain Men” atop the beautiful rugged Spring Mountain. If you are fans of Corison and old Mayacamas, these are must buys for your cellar!
2012 Smith-Madrone
Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley Spring Mountain District
$288 6pack
94 Points Antonio Galloni
“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite a bit more polished than the 2011. Ripe, voluptuous and very much in the style of the year, the 2012 is a showy wine, with plenty of intensity and resonance. At the same time, there is plenty of tannic backbone lurking beneath that gives the wine its power and overall structure.”
And don’t miss their award winning dry Riesling! It is fabulous--perfect balance of fruit, acidity, structure and weight.
2012 Smith-Madrone Riesling Napa Valley Spring Mountain District
$195 6pack

Smith-Madrone is a family-run estate-bottled winery dedicated to producing fine wines exclusively from its own vineyards. In 1971, 200 acres were purchased high atop Spring Mountain, west of St. Helena, in the Napa Valley. One of most beautiful appellations of the Napa Valley, the Spring Mountain District was recognized by the B.A.T.F. in May of 1993. Charles and Stu Smith built the winery by hand, using stones and lumber from the property. It has stunning 360-degree views of the floor of the Napa Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the distance, as well as of Smith-Madrone's own steep dry-farmed vineyards. Another striking historical and visual note is the dramatic corridor of 22 Picholine olive trees which descend the slope below the winery into the vineyards. More than a hundred and twenty years old, these trees were carefully preserved when the vineyards were re-planted. Their huge proportions (some stretch as tall as 35 feet) are a testament to their struggle for precious mountain sunlight.
