Subject: Cos d'Estournel Vertical!

The Essence of Class and Refinement, Chateau Cos d’Estournel!!
We were treated to this fun vertical and it was so enlightening to taste side by side the vintage characteristics and evolution of these exceptional wines. As we have been finding the 2004s are the wines to buy from Bordeaux for the price-quality ratio. These are all released direct from Bordeaux.

1996 Cos d’Estournel $350 bottle SALE PRICE $1980 6pack
94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar “Saturated deep ruby. Ineffable aromas of black fruits, minerals, licorice and Havana tobacco. Rich, dense and thick; powerful but harmonious. Layered texture over a strong backbone. Very long on the palate, with thoroughly ripe, noble cabernet tannins. Superb.”

2000 Cos d’Estournel $320 bottle SALE PRICE $1740 6pack
96 Points Neal Martin Wine Advocate “Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 2000 tasting in London. This is a fantastic Cos d’Estournel that I was unsure about out of barrel, but is now blossoming with age. It is adorned with a lovely nose: blackberry, wild hedgerow, espresso, a touch of chocolate and sandalwood. Very fine definition and vigour. The palate is full-bodied with ripe tannins, superb symmetrical structure, dense, obdurate black fruits, a saline note, very well balanced, very focused, broadening out nicely towards the ravishing, supple finish. Excellent. Drink 2015-2040. Tasted March 2010.”

2002 Cos d’Estournel $220 bottle SALE PRICE $1170 6pack
94 Points Wine Advocate “One of the candidates for wine of the vintage, this beauty has a dense purple color to the rim and a classic, noble nose of graphite intermixed with black currant, spice box, licorice, and red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied with exceptional precision and definition, this beautifully textured wine stands out as one of the most successful wines of this irregular vintage. A brilliant effort, it should be at its best between 2008 and 2020.”

2004 Cos d’Estournel $175 bottle SALE PRICE $990 6pack
94 Points Neal Martin Wine Advocate “This Cos d’Estournel has great potential. The nose has certainly closed down since I last tasted it at en primeur, less floral and more tertiary with a surly broody quality. Cedar and a hint of dark chocolate coming through with aeration, roasted herbs. Very well defined. The full-bodied palate is very tannic structure with a solidity that suggests extended cellaring is mandatory. This Cos d’Estournel is powerful and masculine, yet with wonderful freshness and vitality and a slight savoury tang evolving with further aeration on the persistent finish. Drink 2018-2035+ Tasted November 2008.”

2005 Cos d’Estournel $350 bottle SALE PRICE $1980 6pack
98 Points Robert Parker "It is unquestionably another superb classic from proprietor Michel Reybier and his brilliant winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats. Made from an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%) and the balance mostly Merlot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc, this superb effort requires plenty of time in the bottle. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of licorice, Asian spices, creme de cassis, blackberries, and toasty oak. This full-bodied St.-Estephe is exceptionally powerful, pure, and dense with a layered mid-palate that builds like a skyscraper. While there are massive tannins, they are remarkably velvety and well-integrated in this big, backstrapping effort that should enjoy an unusually long life. Forget it for 8-10 years, and drink it between 2017-2040."
