2009 Calon Segur $175 bottle
94+ Robert Parker
“The 2009 is an uncompromising, masculine, massive style of wine that needs 15-20 years of cellaring even in this luscious, flashy, flamboyant vintage. It is super-tight and needs lots of coaxing and aeration. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050+.”

2009 Calon Segur $165 bottle
94+ Robert Parker “The 2009 has the highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) ever included in a Calon-Segur (the rest is Merlot and Petit Verdot). Completely different from its St.-Estephe brethren, it is more backward and structured with a dense purple color, lots of black cherry, black currant, loamy earth, forest floor and spice notes, excruciatingly high levels of tannin, and a wonderful inner core of sweetness and concentration. It could behave like the 1982, which, at age 30, is just becoming mature. The 2009 is an uncompromising, masculine, massive style of wine that needs 15-20 years of cellaring even in this luscious, flashy, flamboyant vintage.”

2008 Calon Segur $145 bottle
94 Points Wine Advocate “Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. This is a great Calon Segur from the late Mme Gasqueton, surpassing my appraisal in October 2010. The nose is delectable: very lifted perfume, well defined with crisp black fruit, cassis, tobacco and a touch of gravel. Very Saint Estephe. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost understated, very elegant entry that builds nicely towards a very well defined, classy finish. There is very high quality fruit and winemaking in evidence.” — Neal Martin

2006 Calon Segur $165 bottle
94 Points WA Neal Martin “Decanted for one hour before pouring, I was intrigued to see whether the Calon-Segur lived up to the praise I heaped upon it just before bottling? It has a glorious, tertiary bouquet that unwinds with notes of blackberry, liquorice, Provencal herbs, white fennel and a touch of melted tar. Good definition and purity. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, a slight metallic note on the entry, very good depth of flavour with blackberry, cassis and black plum. More alcoholic on the finish than I expected although this is counterpoised by sharp acidity. This is a more generous Calon-Segur that I anticipated, but great length and potential. Drink 2014-2025+.”

2008 Clarence de Haut Brion $165 bottle
Haut Brion’s second wine
92 Points Wine Advocate Neal Martin “Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. I was quite blown away by the “Clarence de Haut-Brion”. It has a classy, much more reserved, undergrowth-tinged bouquet with beautifully defined tertiary fruit. The palate is full-bodied with sinewy tannins. Forceful, powerful, masculine but it maintains balance and freshness from start to finish. Wow. This rips up all my previous expectations! Tasted January 2012.”

2006 Cos d’Estournel $220 bottle
94 Points Robert Parker “The exceptional 2006 Cos d’Estournel is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, 55% of the production was utilized. Revealing superb intensity for a 2006 as well as an inky/blue/purple color, and a sweet bouquet of blue and black fruits, licorice, graphite, and charcoal, this full-bodied 2006 possesses high levels of sweet tannin. This wine is characterized by a freshness and precision that give it a 1996-like affinity. Enjoy this beautifully concentrated, exceptionally pure, statuesque Cos d’Estournel over the next 20-25 years. By the way, it was bottled without any fining or filtration.”

2010 Chateau Giscours Margaux $125 bottle
94 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. I have always thought that this was one of the finest wines that has come from Giscours in recent years. Here, the 2010 has a well-defined, quite intense bouquet with dried violet petals infusing the precocious black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and very structured, but it certainly has the weight of fruit to support it. The finish is opaque and dense, a great wine built for the long-term. Tasted January 2014.”

1998 Grand Puy Lacoste $150 bottle
92 Points Robert Parker “Tasted at the château, the 1998 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has really developed in commendable fashion in recent years. It had a striking bouquet with intense blackberry, wild strawberry and graphite scents, a vivacious bouquet that is less austere than other vintages. The palate is very well balanced with a smooth texture. Like the aromatics, I feel this is more approachable because its backbone is not as "stiff". The salinity on the finish tempts you back for another sip of this hidden gem of late-nineties Bordeaux. Tasted July 2016.”

2000 Gruaud Larose $220 bottle
94 Points Robert Parker “A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years.” June 2010

2004 Haut Bailly $150 bottle
93 Points Robert Parker “The 2004 Haut-Bailly is a candidate for the finest wine of the appellation. Its dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by classic aromas of scorched earth, sweet black currants, cherries, and a hint of pain grille. Light on its feet, but substantially flavored, it possesses stunning purity, good acidity, ripe tannin, and abundant flavor as well as length. It builds incrementally and subtly in the mouth, but it’s the real deal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2024.”

2009 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion $145 bottle
Second label of La Mission Haut Brion and treated with equal care as its big brother, this gorgeous red may be a bit flashy at first, but also deep and thought-provoking.
93 Points Wine Advocate Neal Martin
“Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. Nobody could quite believe how well the Chapelle de la Mission ‘09 showed under blind conditions. It is endowed with a quintessential Graves-like nose with ebullient black fruit, black olive, singed leather and a touch of graphite. It is very composed and focused, the oak very well embroidered into the fruit profile. The palate is backward and tightly coiled at the moment with insistent grip towards the bright, luscious finish that manages to maintain tension and poise. This is offering so much pleasure now - it will be interesting to see how it evolves. Tasted January 2013.”

2000 Lafon Rochet $120 bottle
92 Points Wine Advocate Neal Martin “A very dense, quite opulent plum-scented nose with briary, blueberry, a touch of hoi sin and macerated cherries. Good lift and definition. Full-bodied, rich, dense black fruits with thick chewy tannins. Dense structure, great weight and persistency with a succulent blackberry finish. Still very primal with a long future ahead. Superb. Drink 2012-2025 . Tasted October 2007.”

2007 Pape Clement $165 bottle
92 Points Robert Parker “One of the stars of the vintage, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot reveals sweet burning ember, charcoal, barbecue smoke, black currant, plum, and graphite notes. This opulent, impressively endowed, medium to full-bodied 2007 possesses sweet tannin and a long finish. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years.”

2006 Pape Clement $175 bottle
95 Points Wine Advocate
“I can’t say enough about the extraordinary work proprietor Bernard Magrez, assisted by the internationally renowned Michel Rolland, is doing at Pape-Clement. From this outstanding terroir, he comes close to rivaling what both Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion are accomplishing a few miles away. The dense purple-colored 2006 boasts an extraordinary perfume of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, burning embers, and a sensation that can only be described as like walking through a damp forest on a hot, humid day. Full-bodied, extraordinarily textured, and multidimensional with an amazingly long finish of nearly 60 seconds, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot from a 75-acre vineyard is a compelling wine that is one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.” — Neal Martin

2007 Pichon Lalande $165 bottle
Seductive with ripe berry fruits. Drinking beautifully now!
91 Points Antonio Galloni “Another surprise in this part of the tasting, the 2007 Pichon Lalande is an excellent choice for drinking now, as the aromatics have started to open up nicely. Hints of sweet tobacco, sage and herb all lift from the glass. There is more than enough depth to support another 15-20 years of fine drinking. The 2007 is not a big wine, but instead makes a compelling case for itself with striking aromatic intensity, silky tannins and that most elusive quality of all: balance. This is very nicely done, especially within the context of a year marked by a cool and wet summer.”— Tasted October 2017

2008 Pontet Canet $165 bottle
96 Points Robert Parker “A candidate for the “wine of the vintage,” Pontet Canet’s 2008 boasts an opaque purple color as well as copious aromas of sweet blueberries, blackberries and black currant fruit intertwined with lead pencil shavings, subtle barbecue smoke and a hint of forest floor. Full-bodied, with fabulous richness, texture and tremendous freshness, this first-growth-like effort is more developed than the uber-powerful 2010. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades. Bravo!”

2006 Pontet Canet $175 bottle
95 Points Wine Advocate “Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s Pontet-Canet dinner at The Ledbury. One of my favourite recent vintages, the 2006 is initially quite “strict” and “edgy” on the nose with cedar, blackberry and graphite but then manifests that opulence and almost braggadocio on the nose. The palate has a seriously good backbone, real structure and beguiling symmetry with a long grippy finish that suggests long-term ageing is a rule, not an option. Tasted February 2011.”— Neal Martin
