These wines have it all: purity, elegant fruit, incredible length, richness balanced by enamel-stripping acidity, and off-the-charts minerality.

Although these vines are within the limits of Vouvray, Michel has decided to declassify them and label them as Vin de France.
2018 Michel Autran 'Cap à l'Ouest' Pet-Nat $35 bottle/$336 case
Sparkling
100% Chenin Blanc. Michel only makes this in certain vintages. Fruit from the Les Enfers lieu-dit, picked on the first pass. A serious & complex pet-nat with 18mo on aging on the lees. Disgorged June 2020.

2018 Michel Autran 'Les Enfers Tranquilles’ $40 bottle/$420 case
100% Chenin Blanc. From Les Enfers lieu-dit, and his Le Clos Rompu and La Motte parcels. Clay & silex soils. 20mo elevage in 400L barriques, with 10% in new barrel.

2018 Michel Autran 'Ciel Rouge' $45 bottle/$480 case
100% Chenin Blanc. Mostly old vines (~80yo) from the 0.4ha Clos de la Roche de Cestre, on red clay (with some limestone). Elevage begins for 12mo in 400L barriques, followed by 8mo in tank.
Michel Autran is one of the top producers in Vouvray today, owning prime vineyards in Noizy. Farming is completely organic, and due to the steepness of some of the plots, a horse is necessary for the vineyard work. The vines are all between 50-70 years, and all replanting is with massale selection of old vines from Chenin guru Francois Pinon. Harvesting is by hand and with multiple tries to ensure the small team of workers make the best selection in the vineyard. Fermentation begins with native yeast in stainless steel before immediately being racked off by gravity into barrel, some new, but most 4-12 years old and coming from friends like Carême or the late Stéphane Cossais. A small amount of sulfur is used at débourbage if necessary, otherwise, the wines are raised completely sans souffre.
