“2004 confirms its status as one of the all-time great vintages for Barolo. The long, moderate growing season and late harvest produced a set of beautifully perfumed, layered Barolos that are built on class and finesse.
“Readers looking for a first-rate Barolo producer whose pricing has remained very fair need look no further than the wines of Azelia and proprietor Luigi Scavino. These are among my favorite wines to drink, especially in restaurants, where they don’t suffer from the larger markups that accompany some of the region’s better known bottlings.”— Antonio Galloni May 2015 |
| 2004 Azelia di Luigi Scavino Barolo $65 bottle Sale $360 6pack
92 Points Antonio Galloni “What a pleasure it is to revisit Azelia's 2004 Barolo. Beautifully layered and expressive in the glass, the 2004 is striking in every way. Dark red cherry, plum and spice are pushed forward in this gorgeous, entry-level offering. Think of Azelia's Barolo as equivalent to a village-level Burgundy from a top grower. It is every bit that seductive. The blend is 40% Cerretta, 30% Voghera (young vines) and 30% parcels in Castiglione Falletto next to Bricco Fiasco. The 2004 spent two years in cask.”

| 2004 Azelia di Luigi Scavino Barolo San Rocco$110 bottle Sale $594 6pack 95 Points Antonio Galloni “The 2004 Barolo San Rocco is in a gorgeous place right now. Expressive savory and floral notes open up in a lifted Serralunga Barolo endowed with superb underlying depth and textural richness. Ample, layered and beautifully expressive through to the finish, the 2004 is just as impressive today as it was from barrel. The 2004 spent two years in French oak barrels, 20% new.”

| 5L 2004 Massolino-Vigna Rionda Barolo Margheria $795 each 5L 94+ Antonio Galloni “Massolino's 2004 Barolo Margheria offers considerable energy and intensity, with powerful tannins enshrouding a potent core of fruit. With time in the glass, hints of dark blue/purplish fruit, licorice, mint, violets, mocha and new leather gradually open up, but the Margheria retains a sense of classic Serralunga austerity. That said, the 2004 has developed nicely in bottle and appears to have a bright future. Readers might want to give the 2004 another few years in bottle, as it is still quite youthful and not quite as expressive as it was when it was younger.” |
| 5L 2004 Massolino-Vigna Rionda Barolo Parafada $750 each 5L 93 Points Antonio Galloni “The estate's 2004 Barolo Parafada is the most accessible of these 2004 Barolos. It possesses a fat, unctuous texture, with superb ripeness, poise and balance. A note of sweetness from the French oak lingers on the finish. In 2004 the Parafada is aged in a mix of 40% cask , 30% 500 liter barrels and 30% 225 liter barrels. The use of French oak gives this wine its full-bodied, soft, fruit-driven texture.” |
