We're always wondering why folks don't buy more wine in magnum bottles, the equivalent of two regular sized bottles. With all the holiday festivities fast approaching, and so many great wines in stock under $100 per magnum, we figured we'd give you three reasons why you should come by and grab a few.
No "jug wine" here.
Every now and again someone grabs a big bottle and says - "is this any good?" - well, yes! In fact, quality winemakers are very particular about the wines they choose to bottle in larger sizes, as they are more costly and laborious. As wine oxidizes slower in larger containers, the magnum bottle is also a much better environment for wine to age if decide to keep a few in your stash. So, if it doesn't say Barefoot or Yellow Tail on it and costs more than $30, i'd say check it out.
It's really not that much wine!
Any party of 5 or more guests merits a magnum. You'll end up opening another bottle anyway, and the magnum ensures everyone is enjoying the same wine. Also, save yourself the hassle of wrestling with a flimsy cork screw because you can't find your good one. Oh yeah, it's less recycling to take out. You can't lose.
They're super festive!
Let's face it, it's straight up fun to go around with a big bottle and pour everyone a glass of your new favorite wine. Magnums are also hard to miss and become great conversational pieces. Bring a mag (or two) and you'll be the life of the party!! |

| | (b) Lanson Champagne Brut "Black Label" NV $80
Lanson's flagship label is a great representation of their traditional style. Sleek, crisp, tangy and mouthwatering. Look up how to saber a Champagne bottle and break the internet with your millions of instagram likes!
(w) Steininger Gruner Veltliner 2015 $38
Gruner is arguably the best all around white wine for parties, with its light, fresh and vibrant character. Just the right amount of fruit to keep the NZ Sauvignon Blanc crew happy, yet this wine has the mineral energy expected from high quality Gru Vees.
(w) Domaine des Gandines Vire Clesse 'Les Climats' 2014 $50
Gorgeous Chardonnay from Vire Clesse, an appellation in the southern part of Burgundy that deserves your full attention. It was created combining two of the best terroirs in the Macon district and yields wines with beautiful texture and balance. Medium to full body with a hint of lemon custard.
(r) Maisons Brulees Pinot Noir 2013 $28
You heard it here first, this is the official sports-drink of this holiday season! Light and juicy, with the fruity / sour satisfaction you get from red sour patch candy. The perfect party Mag, and its SO CHEAP for this type of artisan winemaking. Only a few left! Wait, did we mention it's C H E A P?
(r) Fabien Jouves "Tu Vin Plus aux Soirees" 2016 $34
Fabien is a budding rock star in the region of Cahors, Southwest France. This wine is pure fun, and its medium to light feel makes it a seriously crushable drink. Blue fruit and spice with everything nice. AKA CHEAP!
(r) Herve Souhaut "La Souterrone" 2016 $70
Meticulous vineyard work, incredible locale and Herve's vision of fruit purity without makeup, are the main ingredients for his beautifully fragrant and bright wines. "La Souterrone" is made entirely with Gamay from 60 to 80 year old vines planted on granitic soils. There is an inherent floral aspect to this wine coupled with its more high toned fruit components, hinting at strawberry, plum skin, smoky herbs and crushed stones. Fantastic wine. If you don't buy this, we don't mind drinking it all ourselves.
(r) Fattoria Zerbina Ravenna Rosso "Marzieno" 1995 $75
"Marzieno"was first produced in the mid 80's in lockstep with the super-Tuscan fever. Ever since, it has garnered high accolades from Porker, Gambero Rosso and etc. The bottom line: It is rare to come by mature wines in large under $100. Sangiovese is the base for this wine, with smaller percentages of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Treat your guests.
(r) Chateau Citran Haut-Medoc 2009 $75 Big, firmly tannic wine, smoky and warm, with great swathes of black currant fruit. It is firmly structured, but it is the rich sweet fruits that are the attraction. (91 points / Wine Enthusiast)
(r) Christian Tschida, BRUTAL!!! 2016 $90
Barcelona's Bar Brutal is legendary in Natural Wine circles. Among being the most extreme (and also damn good) wine bars in the world, each year they commission various winemakers to make extreme wines for the Brutal Wine Corporation. 2016 was Christian Tschida's turn. There were only two 500-liter barrels and the entire lot was bottled in magnums (!). The base for this year's volume is Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and a few other red varieties in small amounts. After the crush, the wine is left in contact with its skins for one year, racked, and bottled without any additions. Think of this as the first time you heard Hendrix wail. It's winemaking with distortion and gain.
