Avi Deixler is the mind behind ABSENTEE WINERY in Point Reyes, California.  I met him some 10 years ago, when he came in for a summer job at a wine shop I helped manage in Westchester and needless to say, the wine bug bit him hard! After working at the shop for a summer, he spent the vintages that followed working harvests in Oregon, Australia and France, learning first hand cellar work, how drive a tractor, clean barrels and etc (he got so good at it, other wineries buy his used barrels now).

After returning from a stint in Australia, he was shocked at how wine making in a large scale resembled nothing of how we all assume wine is made, and the wines were just as uninspiring as their color-coded labels featuring [insert cute critter du jour here]. It was then he decided to take the leap and start his own winery.

He had spend his childhood in Glen Ellen, so the a move to California was natural.  He found an old dairy barn in Point Reyes that had the perfect bones to materialize his dream.  He now sources fruit from a few organic farmers in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties and ferments his wines traditionally, without any additions or corrections.

We are thrilled and incredibly proud to introduce his wines to you, and expose your palate to the new crop of American talent. These are the cult wines of the future.

ABSENTEE WINERY "RED"  2016

Avi's "Red" is a field blend of Carignan/Syrah/Petite Syrah/Abouriou/Zinfandel.  The grapes are harvested separately at the same vineyard in Glen Ellen, but fermented together in barrel.  It is a rich, spirited red wine, with cherries and earthy baking spices dominating the palate, encased by ripe tannins.  Think "The Prisoner's" country cousin.

ABSENTEE WINERY "LET ROT"  2017

In his second vintage, Avi got his hands on prime-time Syrah from old vines in Mendocino.  This is an intense and bold wine, the type that made R.P. shake at the knees when he used to taste wine for a living.  A wine made with the intention to evolve in the bottle, yet will please those who crave big reds to drink with a fork and knife.
