Subject: What'd you do for cardio minutes last week?

Good morning Friend!

I can't believe the Celtics got blown out by 44 points Friday and then won last night.  Talk about a roller coaster.

I do want to point out something I noticed as a strength coach and fan of basketball.  The Celtics had 2 tough series in a row.  One that lasted 6 games and the 2nd that lasted 7 games.  The Cavaliers won each of their 1st 2 series in 4 games.  They played 5 fewer games and had 8 days off before they played the Celtics (on top of 6 days off before they played their 2nd round series).  This adds up.  14 days off from playoff basketball and 5 fewer games played.  This means they got to sleep in their bed and go to bed on a regular schedule more consistently.  They didn't have to travel and they got to work on their strength & conditioning.  I'm sure their nutrition was more consistent and timely as well.

The performance benefits the Cavs experienced were clearly visible in their total domination, if you watched games 1 & 2 and remember the Celtics are a good team.  They were the #1 team in the Eastern Conference this year.  But work + rest, sure contributes to success and that's why it's important for us / you to prioritize your work (boot camp, finishing workout cards, cardio minutes, stretching, sports, recreation) and rest (sleep, nutrition, downtime, massage, stretching, yoga, meditation...).

Do this consistently and you'll be able to impose your will more often and relish the physical contact that comes with it.  :-)

Minutes are due today.  You are the person who makes change happen.  You live an active lifestyle and build your life around your workouts because it is part of your identity.  It may be bumpy in the beginning and at times when the people in your world and you are adjusting to you making time for yourself, but overtime everyone will adjust and they'll know this is important to you and for you.  You must take advantage of the windows of time that are least disruptive to the people in your world which means prioritizing your workouts and saying no to things that don't support them.  Like going to bed when the Celtics or some other consumable temptation is on.

Today is a new day and tomorrow is another new day and the day after that and so on and so forth.  You get a fresh start, so capture this moment.  Say yes to you.  Be early.  Get it done as best you can, move on to your next role / task and then prepare to present your best self to tomorrow.

Your coach,

Mike Alves
