Subject: Little Things Are Big Things: Mindset

Hi Friend!

Yesterday was trash day and as Vivi and I were leaving for school we noticed our neighbors trash flying down the street.  It looked like they bought some furniture and all the styrofoam and packaging was getting blown away.

I said, "c'mon Vivi, let's go pick up the trash so our neighborhood stays nice".

She being a supportive little helper, said "O.K. dad".

It took 2 minutes to get all the trash from under the cars and on the side walk, pack it back in the box and pile some heavier trash on top.  It was a little thing effort wise, and a big thing to keep our neighborhood nice and teach a good lesson to my daughter.

On the subject of trash, Lisa D, a soon to be 10 year member, mentioned one day, that there was this corner in her neighborhood that had become accumulated with trash and was an eye sore.  She and a friend decided one day they'd clean it up.  It made her feel good to provide a kind service to the community and ironically its stayed clean.

One day when she visited her son in another city, they noticed a nearby corner was also filled with trash.  She got him one of those trash picker uppers with a claw and a trigger and he used it to clean up the corner.  Ironically it too has stayed clean.

Lisa hypothesized that if something is clean, it stays clean and if something gets a piece of trash, it starts to attract more trash.  It's as if an item of trash says to other people that "hey you can throw your trash here because someone else already did it".  Little things are big things.

Little Things Are Big Things:  Mindset
  • Whether you think you can't or you think you can, either way you're right.
  • Yin & Yang
  • Do comfortable things and avoid uncomfortable things.
  • Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
  • There's a million reasons it's going to be difficult.
  • There's a million reasons why it's going to be easy.
  • Why is this happening to me?
  • Why is this happening for me?
  • Have to.
  • Get to.
  • Blaming others.
  • Accepting responsibility.
  • Overwhelmed.
  • Overloaded.
  • Lemons.
  • Lemonade.

Every moment you get to choose how you're going to see something.  Sure, you may get a negative or counter productive thought, but you also get the choice to disagree with it, reframe it and choose a different one.

Stronger
If you want to get stronger, you have to move more resistance and/or move more resistance faster.  You have to have progressive overload.  You have to have some combination of volume and intensity.  You have to do work.  You have to have stress.

Metaphor for Life
When things are challenging.
When things don't seem to be going your way.
When you feel overwhelmed.
When you feel stressed.
When you feel rushed.
When you feel behind.
When you feel the struggle.
When your home is a disaster.
When you say the wrong things.
When you make the wrong decisions.

Catch yourself.

Stop.

Take a step back and look at your life.

And reframe it.

If you need stress to get stronger in the gym, maybe this stress is intentional to make you stronger in life.

How can you unload your plate?

Why is this happening for you?

Why can you do it anyways?

How can you get comfortable being uncomfortable?

What are all the reasons you can do it?

You don't have to do anything.  Why do YOU, GET TO DO IT?

You have all the power.  Don't give it to someone else by blaming them.  Accept the responsibility for better or worse.  You either get to celebrate your success and reinforce your good efforts or you get to learn what doesn't works, laugh and get a good story.

It's Yin & Yang.  You need stress to get stronger because without it you get weaker and if you get weaker life gets harder, not easier.

Take your stress and your lemons and lift those babies up and down and love it.

You're in control.  You get to do it.  It's happening for you so you can get stronger and better to live your best case life.

Get going,

Coach Mike!
